How to Remove the Crank Pulley Bolt on a Honda Civic

The crankshaft --- a piece of a vehicle that is often simply called a "crank" --- is a part of your Honda Civic, which converts the reciprocating movement of your pistons into a rotating movement of the vehicle. Attached to the crank is a pulley, which is used to transfer the movement of the crank to other parts of the car. A central bolt or bolt occupies this pulley in its proper location within the engine compartment of your Honda Civic. In order to replace or troubleshoot the crank pulley, you will need to remove this screw before you will be able to take out the pulley. View here for more info: removing crank pulley

  • 1. Remove the battery cable from the battery terminal --- black negative car --- using the appropriate size wrench for your vehicle.

  • 2. Jack the car and put easels in the frame sections to safely support the Honda Civic from the floor.

  • 3. Remove the splash shield located under the engine compartment, removing all necessary screws. Make sure the shield is well supported before removing the last few screws to keep the shield from falling on you or the floor.

  • 4. Remove the drive belt from the Civic's engine compartment.

  • 5. Locate the crankshaft and crank pulley. Use a strap wrench wrapped in a store towel or other soft fabric to lock the crank pulley in position.

  • 6. Find the screw in the center of the pulley and determine the proper sized socket that should be used to turn the screw. Place the appropriately sized outlet on a breaker bar and turn the screw to the left to break free.

  • 7. Attach a ratchet to the outlet or use a wrench to continue turning the crank pulley screw until it is removed from its position.
